Agile Project Management And The PMBOK Guide
The PMBOK guide, better known as “A Guide to the Project Management Body Of Knowledge,” is a book created by the PMI, which is used to guide the Project Managers. Even after clearing the PMP exams, the project managers use the PMBOK guide for further jobs. However, certain changes have been made in the book.
As per the recent edition, the PMBOK guide has included the Agile method of project management in its books instead of the waterfall approach. The waterfall approach is an outdated project management approach that has been rejected by the companies. In this new edition of PMBOK, the users would find the Agile section in Appendix X3 of the book.
Agile In Knowledge Areas
Agile is used in every knowledge area of the PMBOK guide. However, the primary area of focus is to allow the objectives of the Agile methodology in defining the other words in the section. By installing Agile in the guide, the PMBOK helps the project manager in knowing the various areas in which they can effectively use the method of Agile.
Earlier, the waterfall approach was used, which had its advantages and disadvantages. Though the approach worked well for most of the time, the cons started to over-power the pros of the system. Due to these reasons, the PMBOK guide included the Agile methodology in its latest edition. Though this particular methodology has been in the market since the last decade, PMI recently included it. This implies that there would even be a change in the course of the PMP. The project managers would be taught about the Agile methodology in the upcoming PMP courses so that they can use it in the practical field.
Why Was Such Change Needed?
There are certain reasons as to why PMI included the Agile methodology in its guide. It is well known that the PMBOK guide follows the ‘Defined Process control model” approach. In simple language, the PMBOK guide follows the traditional approach of project management, which is basically about controlling and achieving the predictability of the cost of the project and the time it will take to complete the project.
On the other hand, the Agile methodology uses the “Empirical process control model” approach, which practically uses an adaptive approach so that the team can increase the business result even in an uncertain environment. In the PMBOK approach, the project manager is required to divide the task in the team and see to it that the team completes the project. In the Agile methodology, the project manager not only works as a team leader but also as a team member. Here, the project manager is not only responsible for giving tasks but also work as a team member.
The waterfall approach had made it difficult for companies to do projects in a short time. Though this method was effective for long projects which required a lot of time, it is not suitable for projects in today’s world, where the company has to submit the project as soon as possible. With the change in environment, the requirements have changed, and companies are slowly turning towards the Agile methodology due to its various advantages.
Agile methodology divides the project into several parts and then works on it. This helps the team in showing results at any moment and even helps the customers and clients to get involved in the project. By dividing the tasks into smaller tasks, the time required to complete the project shortens, and the team gets enough time to rectify any loopholes or mistakes that might occur in the project.
In the recent edition of PMBOK, the Agile methodology has been mentioned. This further implies that the upcoming project managers who would be taking up the course of PMP will learn about the Agile methodology. Moreover, the previous PMP certified managers will even learn about the Agile methodology to save their certificates. As it is well known that a PMP certified professional has to give the exam from time to time for keeping the certificate, the project manager also gets updated with the changing time. This would help the project manager to know about the recent approaches and help the company is doing its projects more effectively.
